About the Ogasawara Islands

1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo, the Ogasawara Islands, a World Natural Heritage site,

have never been connected to a continent and are home to many endemic species of plants and animals

that have evolved in their own unique way.

In the Ogasawara islands, Chichijima(=Father island) and Hahajima (=Mother island) are the only inhabited islands.

To protect the precious endemic species and plants, the only way to get to the Ogasawara Islands

is a 24-hour ferry ride each way from and to Tokyo Takeshiba Pier Terminal.

(Actually, the Ferry is so comfotable that 24hours goes by fast! )

Once you get there, a peaceful and healing time in the subtropical nature awaits you!

Welcome to the Ogasawara Islands!

Eco-Tourism in Ogasawara ~Protecting the Nature~

The Ogasawara Village is actively practicing Eco-Tourism in order to protect and sustainably use their natural and historical culture. Whale-watching was offered as a tourist activity in the Ogasawara island for the first time in Japan in 1988, and local rules were established.

In order to preserve the original nature and to allow people to enjoy tourism as well, local rules and guidelines are now established not only for whales, but also for natural monuments and endangered species.

With the exception of recreational trails open to the public, tourists must be accompanied by a registered guide when visiting Minamijima, the Hahajima Sekimon area and other designated places.

We sincerely appreciate your understanding and support for protecting the precious nature of the Ogasawara Islands!

History of Ogasawara islands

The first settlers on the Ogasawara Islands were Westerners and Pacific Islanders in 1830.

In 1876, the area was internationally recognized as Japanese territory,
through surveys and cultivation by the Edo Shogunate and the Meiji government.

During World War II, the Ogasawara Islands were the scene of fierce battles.

After the war, the Ogasawara Islands were occupied by the U.S. military and returned to Japan in 1968.

The descendants of the first settlers live on the islands.

Today, the Ogasawara Islands are recognized as a World Natural Heritage site and

You can spend calm, relaxing and healing time in the tropical natural paradise!
